THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicles Department and the Police have come up with a new way to charge money from drivers by placing cameras all over the road. Owners of vehicles caught on camera by the Motor Vehicles dept and the traffic police on the same road have to pay multiple fines. They realized this when several notices came for the same offence.
The speed is 30 km / h in the school area. Exceeding this speed limit at night will result in a fine. The allowable speed is 50 km / h within city limits. However, in Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, if the speed exceeds 40, a fine will be levied.
The Department of Motor Vehicles has installed cameras at 625 centers across the state. 101 more cameras will be installed soon. The speed control areas are also not mentioned so that it grabs the attention of travellers. Speed limit sign boards are only placed here and there.
Police and MVD will charge fine for the same crime. A third fine will be charged if seen by police. Authorities say that the vehicle owner is informed about the fine. But in most cases the owner is unaware and came to know about it while approaching MVD. A Kannur native had to pay a fine of Rs 1,33,500 as a fine for 89 times.
