ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will vote for its new Prime Minister on Monday. Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is likely to be elected as the next prime minister of the country.
Shehbaz was nominated to the prime minister’s post by all the opposition parties on Sunday. His opponent is Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a 65-year-old former foreign minister from Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Imran Khan is planning to resign all his MPs from the National Assembly as soon as Shehbaz Sharif becomes prime minister.
Meantime, Imran Khan’s supporters have staged protests in twelve cities, including Islamabad, Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore, in Pakistan. The protesters claim that the US is behind the ousting of Imran Khan. Millions of people, including women, took to streets on Sunday night.
Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted through a no-confidence vote on Saturday night. It was Shehbaz who had introduced the no-confidence motion and led the procedures for ousting Imran. Despite the support of 199 members in the joint opposition, Imran was ousted by 174 votes, last day. In the 342-member assembly, 172 votes are required for a simple majority.
