NEW DELHI: CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury has said that the party will not accept the reference to 'love jihad'. Love jihad argument is part of the Hindutva agenda. Yechury pointed out that the Constitution of India gives freedom to an adult man and woman to live together. He said the party would look into the remarks of former Thiruvambadi MLA George M Thomas. George M Thomas's controversial remark was made in the context of the love and marriage between Shejin, a Muslim DYFI leader from Kodancherry, Kozhikode, and Joysna, a Christian.

George M Thomas said that Shijin, a member of the party's local committee had not reported, discussed or sought permission from the party for his relationship or love marriage. This an act which breaches communal harmony and such people cannot be protected. He also said that he would consider taking disciplinary action against Shijin.

But the party leadership and the DYFI leadership completely denied the allegations. CPM Kozhikode district secretary P Mohanan said that Thomas' remarks was a slip of the tongue and that the reference to 'love jihad' was against the CPM's opinion. George M Thomas later corrected his statement and said that he had made a mistake.
