NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police have arrested 14 people in connection with the clashes during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. Stones were pelted at a rally in Jahangirpuri in north-west Delhi yesterday evening as part of Hanuman Jayanti celebrations. The attackers then reportedly set fire to some vehicles.

Nine including eight policemen were injured in the clash. A sub-inspector was shot at during the attack. He is out of danger. However, hospital sources said that he was still in a critical condition. Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said the situation is calm and the clashes were prevented from spreading to other areas.

Delhi is on high alert in the wake of the clashes. About 200 rapid reaction forces have been deployed. The area is being monitored using systems including drones.


Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged everyone to exercise restraint. The security of Delhi is the responsibility of the central government. He therefore urged the Centre to take immediate steps to maintain law and order. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed the Delhi Police to provide strict security in Delhi. Meantime, an alert has been issued in Uttar Pradesh also in the wake of the clashes.
