THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As there are no meteorological stations, the Indian Meteorological Department do weather forecast in four districts of the state depending on other centres. This is at Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Wayanad and Kasaragod districts. These places have automated weather stations but they are not working.

The forecast is done by taking the average of data collected by private individuals and at some research centres. Such centres also charge a fixed amount for providing information. This has been the case for years. IMD has 12 stations in the state in ten districts. There is a strong need to implement it in the four districts with no such facility.

Only 69 automated weather stations

The state needs 256 automated weather stations but currently has only 69. Many of them are dysfunctional. Accurate measurements can be obtained as it is a modern system of operation and control via satellite. It will cost five to ten lakhs to set up a station. The state has asked the Centre to set up more stations.
