NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday halted the action of North Delhi Corporation to demolish the houses of suspected attackers involved in the Jahangirpuri riots on the basis of encroachment. They had set up a two-day plan to evacuate the encroached land which belongs to government. The proceedings started this morning. This was followed by the intervention of the court.
Some people threw stones and caused a commotion during the procession on Hanuman Jayanti. The 'demoliton drive' came after a letter by Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta, who wrote to the NDMC mayor Raja Iqbal Singh to demolish 'illegal' constructions belonging to the 'rioters' in Jahangirpuri. Following this, the government decided to evacuate the illegal structures.
The corporation took this action in police presence. However, the court ordered to stop the proceedings and to maintain the status quo. The corporation has announced a special joint action plan to evacuate the encroachments. About 400 policemen were deployed to deal with law and order issues related to the demolition process.

Some anti-socials hurled stones and rioted at the Hanuman Jayanti procession in Jahangirpuri. They have the support of Aam Aadmi Party MLA and Councilor. Those involved in the attack have carried out large-scale encroachment and constructed buildings here. In the letter, Adesh Gupta asks to find them and demolish them with a bulldozer as soon as possible. The Madhya Pradesh government had similarly demolished the houses of the accused in the communal clashes in Khargone during the Ram Navami procession last week. This caused a great deal of controversy.
