GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat MLA and dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has been arrested. The Assam police arrested him from Palanpur in Gujarat late last night. He was arrested for allegedly spreading enmity between communities on social media. He was arrested following an FIR filed against him for offensive tweets targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The congress leader from Gujarat was arrested soon after a FIR under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with offences related to promoting enmity between communities, was registered at Kokrajhar police station in Assam, his friend Suresh Jat said.

He was taken to Ahmedabad last night and then to Assam this morning. The congress will protest his arrest in New Delhi today. He joined the congress party last year.
