NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has never posed a threat to a country or a society. He was speaking at an event organized by the central government and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee at the Red Fort on the occasion of the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Referring to Aurangzeb's rule, the Prime Minister pointed out that there was a time of oppression in India in the name of religion. Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister to address the Red Fort after sunset.
"This Indian land is not just a country, it is a land of great heritage. India cannot be seen without values and traditions. The Red Fort has witnessed many important periods of our nation. The fort witnessed the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. It is a fort that tested the courage of many heroes who died for the country. The Red Fort commemorates the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Today I am happy that India is moving forward with the ideals of its gurus," the PM said.
"Today the country is celebrating the Aazadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and the 400th Parkash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. Near the Red Fort lies the symbol of Guruji's sacrifice, Sis Ganj Sahib Gurudwara. The Gurudwara reminds us of the greatness of his sacrifice for the protection of our great culture," he added.
