NEW DELHI: The BJP is trying for the implementation of a uniform civil code in the country ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The bill is likely to be implemented within a year. It is reported that efforts have been initiated in BJP-ruling states to bring the issue for active discussion.
With the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption will come under the common law. There will be no special system on the basis of religion.
The BJP chief ministers have asked the Centre to implement the Uniform Civil Code. Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said that the Uniform Civil Code, a key promise in the BJP's manifesto, would be implemented soon. Amit Shah made these remarks at a BJP core committee meeting in Madhya Pradesh yesterday.
The Uniform Civil Code is a pilot project being implemented in Uttarakhand. The issues of CAA, Ram Temple, Muthalaq and removal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir were resolved. Amit Shah had said at the meeting that now was the time to implement the civil code. Shah demanded that everything will be done on time and that the activists should not do anything which harms the party.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had earlier said that a high-level committee would be set up in the state to prepare a draft of uniform civil code. Will not allow anyone to destroy communal harmony in the state. Dhami said that if the Civil Code is implemented in Uttarakhand, other states will follow the suit. The Uniform Civil Code was BJP's main promise in the recent Uttarakhand Assembly elections.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also said that the state government was seriously considering the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. Maurya added that plans are afoot to implement it in the country and the state as soon as possible. Later, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur said that the Uniform Civil Code was a good decision. He said the government was examining the matter and was ready to implement it. Assam Chief Minister Himanda Bishwa Sharma made a similar statement.
BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Pratap Singh has written a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan seeking the formation of a committee to look into various aspects of the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.
