curfew

BHOPAL: The district administration has declared a curfew for the next two days in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh in connection with Eid celebrations. The two-day curfew has been imposed to avoid undesirable incidents. The move comes in the wake of the communal violence that had erupted during Ram Navami celebrations, last month.

“Complete curfew will be imposed in Khargone on May 2 and May 3. Eid prayers should be offered at home. On these days, shops will remain open and students going for exams will be given a pass”, said Summer Singh, the additional magistrate of Khargone. “No event on Akshaya Thrtiya and Parshuram Jayanti will be allowed to be organized in the district”, he added.

Last month, two groups had clashed during a Ram Navami procession in the area. A man was killed and 24 others were injured in the clashes. In addition, a man had opened fire at a police official as well. More than 150 people were arrested in connection with 64 cases of communal violence, following the incident.

In the backdrop of the Ram Navami violence, the state government had directed to take precautionary measures ahead of coming festivals. Besides Eid, restrictions were also imposed for the celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti, Mahavir Jayanti, Good Friday and Hanuman Jayanti.
