THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Private and public sector agencies will install cameras on private vehicles to detect traffic violations. The purpose of the cameras in the vehicles is to trap the offenders who avoid violating rules at the location of the cameras.

According to the police, a surveillance system called 'Integrated Digital Traffic Enforcement System' is being set up. Agencies that pay for cameras and vehicles will receive up to 80 percent of the fines. They will try to maximize profits by imposing maximum fines. With this, the vehicle owners will be fined. The camera detects over speeding, avoiding seatbelt and helmets, talking in mobile phones, triples travel, dangerous driving and illegal parking.

The government has approved DGP Anil Kant's recommendation for digital inspection on the strict condition that not even a single rupee should be deducted from the losses currently incurred by the exchequer. It is also proposed to increase the current revenue. The agencies are responsible for repairing the camera and surveillance vehicle and providing connectivity to bring the footage to the police control room. 1068 cameras will be installed in the first phase.

"Cameras will also be installed in non-police vehicles. Monitoring will be done alternately in several places. The cost will be borne by the agencies", said Manoj Abraham, ADDGP, Police Headquarters
