JAIPUR: A total of 97 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incidents of violence that erupted between two groups in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur, amid Eid celebrations. Curfew is still being enforced in the district. Earlier, internet services were suspended in the area.

Udai Mandir, Nagori Gate, Khanda Phalsa, Pratap Nagar, Dev Nagar, Soor Sagar and Sardarpura are among the areas where curfew has been imposed. The dispute between the two groups over the hoisting of a flag in Jalori Gate area had led to the clashes.

As part of Ei-ul-Fitr celebrations, some activists hoisted Eid flags in the area. A flag was also hoisted near to the statue of freedom fighter Balmukund Bissa. Meanwhile, some people alleged that the saffron flags, which had been hoisted in connection with Parshuram Jayanti, were missing. This had resulted in the violence.

The police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd in the area. Following which, the mob attacked a police’ outpost. Four policemen have been injured in the clashes.

Meantime, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has called the violence unfortunate and said, “People of all societies and religions in Rajasthan have been celebrating all festivals with love and brotherhood and Jodhpur is especially known for its inclusiveness. This tradition should continue. I appeal to the general public to maintain peace."

However, Jodhpur BJP MLA Suryakanta Vyas has strongly opposed the hoisting of Eid flag on the statue of freedom fighter. “They hoisted flag on Bissa Ji’s statue. We strongly oppose it. We won’t forget this”, she said.

BJP state president Satish Poonia has also commented on the incident. “I humbly request you that a fair investigation should be conducted into the incidents and taking suo moto cognizance of the matter, please pass on the necessary instruction to the state government so that peace can be established in the state and the communal incident doesn't get repeated," Poonia requested Governor Mishra in a letter.

The issue has gained international attention as well. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged all communities in the city to work together. “Indian government and law enforcement agencies should ensure peace and harmony in Rajasthan's Jodhpur as people celebrate festivals, including Eid”, said his office spokesperson.
