THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The food safety department will continue inspection in the state on Sunday as well. The inspection, which is being jointly conducted by the food safety department and the health department, has also been extended to bar hotels and star hotels. Food items, license and registration are being inspected.

A total of 1132 sites were inspected within six days. So far, 142 shops were shut down. Out of 349 shops inspected on Saturday, 32 were closed. The testing to detect contamination in fish and jaggery is also in progress. Within two weeks, 6035 kilogram of stale fish have been seized and destroyed in the state. A sum of 2014 samples, recovered from 4010 inspections, have been sent for test.

Food inspections have been intensified in the state following the death of a student in Cheruvathur, after eating shawarma. The presence of Shigella and Salmonella bacteria have been confirmed in the shawarma sample brought for testing from Cheruvathur.

Meantime, four members of a family, who ate fish curry at Kallara in Thiruvananthapuram, have been diagnosed with food poisoning. The victims have been identified as Biju and family, who had bought fish from Pazhaya Chantha in Kallara. Another person who bought fish from the same shop, had found a worm inside a tuna fish.
