KOCHI: Action has been taken against the officials in the incident where a youth died in a bike accident in Thrippunithura yesterday morning. Executive engineer, assistant executive engineer, assistant engineer and overseer of Ernakulam district bridge section have been suspended. Public Works Minister Mohammad Riyas ordered action against the officials based on the chief engineer's report. The minister also directed to register a case against them in the incident. The police had registered a case against the contractor in charge of the construction of the bridge. This was followed by action against the officials.
Public Works Minister Mohammad Riyas had said that stern action would be taken in the incident. The minister had said that there would be no compromise and danger signs should have been installed in the work places. The minister had also sought an urgent report from the public works secretary.
Vishnu, a youth was killed when his bike hit a bridge under construction on Thrippunithura Market Road. Vishnu's father complained that his son died due to the negligence of the authorities and the contractor.
The work of the bridge on the market puthiyakavu road has been dragging for months. Public works department is in charge of the work. The authorities had promised to complete the work soon. However, all those assurances were in vain.
This allegation has been around since the work started. However, there has been no change. The public works department is continuing the renovation work on the road where many vehicles were passing by. Traffic in the area has been stalled in the area.
Adarsh and Vishnu, both from Erur were on their way from Puthiyakavu when the accident happened. Vishnu died in the accident that happened in the morning. The locals said the cause of the accident was the lack of security on the side of the bridge. Only two barrels of tar were kept on the road. The incident took place near the police station.
There is a deep pit between the road and the bridge. The youths were not aware of it as it was early morning. The authorities are the main culprits in the incident.
