ALAPPUZHA: The first Elevated Multi Purpose Community Cattle Shed in the state has been set up at Kuttanad. Another one is nearing completion at Champakulam. In case of flood, the cattle will be safe here and fodder can be provided through the elevator.
The Department of Dairy Development has constructed a three-storey cattle shed at 15 cents land in Nedumudi Grama Panchayat. The cost is Rs 1.80 crore. In case of floods, more than 100 cattle can be stored here at a time.
Cattle accommodation is available on the first and second floors of the building and a ramp is provided for them to walk. There is also a milk storage system, milk testing rooms, office, fodder godown and meeting room. Cattle shed at Champakulam costs Rs 2.69 crore. Many cattle died during last floods. The Department of Dairy Development came up with such a project due to this.
