KOZHIKODE: The vigilance have blamed the officials of the public works department and the contracting company in connection with the collapse of the beams of the Koolimadu bridge. The public works vigilance division has submitted the investigation report to the government. The public works secretary said action would be taken soon on the report.

The report said the assistant executive engineer and the assistant engineer in charge of the project were not in the spot when the beams were installed. The contractors’ explanation was that when the beams were lifted with a hydraulic jack, one of it developed a snag and this caused the beams to collapse. The accident happened on May 16. The three main beams of the Koolimadu bridge connecting Kozhikode and Malappuram districts collapsed.

Only the employees of the contracting company were on site when the beam was installed. The report of PWD’s vigilance mentioned lapse on both sides of Uralungal Labour Society, the contract company, and the public works officials. Meantime, the vigilance rejected allegations of corruption and irregularities.
