THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Another death of scrub typhus known as ‘chellu pani’ has been reported in the state. The dead has been identified as Subitha (38), a native of Parasala. She died while undergoing treatment at the medical college hospital. This is the second death of scrub typhus in the state.

Aswathy, daughter of Shaji Das of Cherunniyoor and Anitha, a tenth class student had died of scrub typhus in the capital city last Thursday. The dog there was also confirmed of scrub typhus.

Six had died of scrub typhus in the state last year and eight in 2020. Fever and chills, headache, body aches and muscle pain, a dark, scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite (also known as eschar), mental changes, ranging from confusion to coma and enlarged lymph nodes are the symptoms of scrub typhus. It affects the brain and heart in a few people. Those with symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
