THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The years of legal battle of the differently abled is becoming fruitful. The government is allowing 4% reservation to the disabled for promotion in the government service.The Department of Social Justice has completed the proceedings. The benefit will be available to those working in 380 posts in 40 departments.

The apex court has questioned the government about their failure to implement the 2016 Supreme court order and directed to submit a report within the second week of July. According to Disability census 2015, 16,991 people are in government service.

Rajiv Kumar Gupta, a native of Karnataka, approached the Supreme Court and got a favorable verdict on this issue. Though states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Goa implemented it, Kerala refused to do so. Anand Narath, president of the Differently-abled employees association, had approached the Supreme Court stating that the order was not being implemented. But now the proceedings are fastened on the grounds that otherwise it would be considered as contempt of court. 'The government will issue an order within days about allotting reservation to the disabled for promotion', said Minister R Bindhu.
