KOCHI: The mother and wife who volunteered to donate the organs of Jijith, who suffered brain death, received yet another shock when they heard of the unforgivable indifference in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The family members were so shocked they were not even ready to comment on the death of the patient, who died soon after receiving Jijith's kidney. The patient apparently died due to the delay in organ transplant surgery.
Varantharappilli native Jijith (39), son of the late Pushpangadan and Shantha, was found lying unconscious on the night of June 14 after falling from his bike in Varantharappally. He had suffered a serious brain injury. He was confirmed brain dead at Aluva Rajagiri Hospital on Saturday night. When hospital authorities said that Jijith's organs would save five lives, his mother Shantha and wife Vidya came forward with willingness to donate his organs.
Jijith's liver was donated to a 65-year-old man from Perumbavoor who was admitted to the Rajagiri Hospital. The pancreas and one kidney were donated to a 29-year-old youth from Thiruvananthapuram undergoing treatment at the Edappally Amrita Hospital. A kidney was donated to the patient at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, while corneas were donated to the Eye Bank at Angamaly LF Hospital.
Jijith, who had been a civil draftsman in the Gulf, returned to Kerala in 2012 following the death of his father. Since then he had been earning a living by giving a Hitachi Excavator for rent and cultivating rice and bananas.
