WAYANAD: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi MP is preparing to visit Wayanad, amid escalating clashes following the SFI attack on his office in Kalpetta. Rahul Gandhi will arrive in Wayanad for a three-day visit, on June 30. The District Congress Committee (DCC) has decided to arrange a big reception for the leader.
Last day, some SFI activists had vandalized Gandhi’s office in Kalpetta, alleging that the MP was not intervening in the buffer zone issue. In protest against the incident, the Congress is planning to organize a huge protest rally in Kalpetta. The rally and meeting will be held at 3 pm on Saturday.
Following the attack, the police had arrested 19 SFI activists, including SFI district president Joel Joseph and secretary Vishnu, in connection with the incident. The Kalpetta DySP was suspended pending further investigation following widespread complaints that the police had failed to prevent violence. Meantime, the CPM explained that the protest was not launched with the knowledge of the party. It also expressed strong outrage over the SFI’s action.
