THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM and the Left front gets a temporary sigh of relief from a major crisis with the resignation of Saji Cheriyan. The controversial statement by Minister Saji Cheriyan insulting the Constitution, led to a state in which the image of CPM and left front would get affected. As a last resort, it led to Cheriyan's resignation and it gave a political boost to UDF especially right after the Thrikkakara by-election victory.
There were strong dissatisfaction among allies including CPI in this issue. CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said that a right decision will be taken at the right time. The discussions with the national leadership and state leadership also analysed that resignation was the right solution. At the meeting held at the AKG centre, the leaders also raised strong criticism against Cheriyan's speech.
Although it was indicated that the minister should resign, there was an understanding that it should not be presented as a party decision but a voluntary decision taken by the minister. The Chief Minister sought legal advice from the Advocate General and others. Thus, a press conference was held and Saji Cheriyan announced his resignation.
The opposition has also come forward against Saji Cheriyan's MLA position but its future depends on court proceedings. It was also a political strategy of the Left Front that the opposition was not allowed to raise the issue in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. The opposition has informed their protest to the Speaker.
