KOTTAYAM: Police have nabbed the murder accused who escaped the Kottayam Sub Jail on Saturday. Binumon, the fifth accused in the Shan Babu murder case, was caught by the police from a field near his house in Meenadom at around 9 pm on Saturday.
A native of Meenadom, Binumon was remanded in the case of murdering Shan Babu, a resident of Vimalagiri, Kottayam and dumping his body in front of Kottayam East police station.
Binumon was entrusted with kitchen duty on Saturday morning. However, he jumped off the prison wall using a log of wood kept in the kitchen, at around 5:30 am.
Police later obtained CCTV footage of Binumon walking and reaching near the East Police Station. He then went to a friend's house in Kanjikuzhi. According to the friend's statement, Binumon left the area as soon as he said that he would inform the police as it was clear that he had escaped from the jail. After receiving information that Binumon had left for Meenadom, police then intensified monitoring in and around Meenadom. The accused was later found in a search conducted with the help of locals. He will be produced in court today. The prison department has launched an investigation as the allegation of a security breach in the incident became strong.
