THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Widespread rain is likely to lash the state today. Yellow alert has been sounded in 11 districts. The Central Meteorological Department has issued an alert in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta have been exempted from the warning.

Low pressure formed over Odisha and low pressure trough in the Arabian Sea are the main reason for the heavy monsoon. The Meteorological Department said there is a possibility of heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. Heavy rain with thunder may occur in hilly areas.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Centre has informed that there is a possibility of high waves and storm surge on Kerala coast till 11.30 pm tomorrow. Fishermen have been banned from going to the sea due to the possibility of severe storms.
