Freedom does not mean having no limitations and boundaries. It is its limits that help make the meaning of freedom brighter. There is no such thing as absolute freedom. Each country has its own constitution and legal system. There is no point in arguing that this is a hindrance to human freedom. Unfettered freedom leads to anarchy everywhere. Licenses and rules apply to the operation of print media and visual media in the country. Freedom of the press does not mean freedom to write anything. The Constitution does not allow a citizen to make an opinion that hurts the sentiments of other religious groups. There are currently no strict regulations on digital media. Therefore, many continue to act irresponsibly as if it is their right to spread any fake news. From personal attacks to baseless attempts to defame the country, there are many who use digital media in the wrong way. Regulating this is essential for the stable existence of the country.

One of the main demands raised by the editors in a recent meeting held by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur in Kozhikode was the regulation of digital media. The minister had also hinted that the matter is under consideration by the government. Nowadays anyone can start online media. No one has any control over the content spread on it. Most of them follow the method of spreading rumours and gossip without any basis of evidence. Some online media have turned into fake news factories because fake stories get more likes and comments. In view of the spread of fake news, it was reported that the central government is preparing a new law to curb them. The Centre is planning to introduce an amendment bill to regulate digital news media and punish violations. The government is planning to bring in the draft bill of 2019 which intends to restrict digital media by bringing them under the purview of the IT Act. The bill will be presented in the monsoon session of Parliament. The Bill also extends the registration and regulation of print media to digital news portals. According to this, the registration of digital media that violates the discipline can be cancelled or frozen. Such media will not be allowed to work in India. With the help of this bill, the government will be able to identify and stop anti-national forces working behind the digital media. There is nothing wrong with criticizing the government based on true news. But spreading fake news just to criticize the government should be stopped.
