NEW DELHI: Olympian P T Usha has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. She took the oath in Hindi in the name of god. After the swearing in, Usha, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Parliament Office, requested to permit AIIMS in Kerala. She also called on Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu.

Usha during her conversation with the Prime Minister said that she has a request and presented the matter of AIIMs. She told Modi that land for AIIMS in Kerala was proposed near Usha School, her firm at Kinalur in Kozhikode and that her school had given five acres of land. The Prime Minister assured to do the needful pointing to Minister of State V Muraleedharan, who was with him. She met Modi along with her husband V Sreenivasan, son Ujwal and Usha School co-founder and general secretary P A Ajanachandran. Congratulating Usha’s son Ujwal, who studied sports medicine, the Prime Minister said that everyone in the family is related to sports. The Prime Minister and the Rajya Sabha chairman congratulated her for taking the oath in Hindi.

Naidu asked her to study the Parliament proceedings and raise her voice for the country and Kerala. When Usha took the oath of office, Naidu reminded the members of the oath by quoting the phrase 'to fulfil duties strictly', prompting laughter.

Priority for development
Usha while talking to the media after the swearing in said her priority is for development. She reached Parliament as a representative of the Indian sports sector. Still will work with other MPs for the needs of Kerala. Usha said that she met CPM leader Elamaram Karim, who criticized her, in the house and he wished her.
