ALAPPUZHA: Sriram Venkataraman assumed charge as the Alappuzha District Collector amidst strong protests. Sriram took charge from the present collector and his wife Renu Raj Monday morning at 10 am. Congress workers waved black flags in front of the Collectorate. Though it was informed that Sriram will take charge this week itself, the date was kept secret in the wake of the protests.

Soon after taking charge, Sriram said that he was working in the health department for more than two years and knows nothing other than the health system. He said that he just came and that his intention is to study and intervene in the best way possible. My appointment as a collector is for the first time and not saying anything in a haste, Sriram responded while replying to the questions.

Sriram is assuming charge as the collector while facing trial in the case of killing journalist K M Basheer after his over speeded car hit the bike he was riding. Renu Raj is transferred from Alappuzha to Ernakulam as collector.
