The centre of attention in a wedding ceremony is the bride and groom. But what if two dead people get married? In this wedding where the bride and the groom are unable to attend, relatives perform the celebratory ceremony without their presence. This kind of bizarre marriage takes place in Karnataka. This is called 'pretha kalyanam' (ghost marriage).
I reached a bit late and missed the procession. Marriage function already started. First groom brings the 'Dhare Saree' which should be worn by the bride. They also give enough time for the bride to get dressed! pic.twitter.com/KqHuKhmqnj

Ghost marriage is performed for those who died soon after birth. These weddings are considered a way of honouring the spirits of the dead. People believe that by marrying the two deceased, their souls will be happy. All the rituals seen in a real wedding are also seen in a ghost wedding. Marriages of dead children are performed by their families. The groom's parents will hand over the bridal dress to the bride's family. As seen in normal weddings, there will be video, camera and refreshments. Also, there will be wedding processions. The only difference is that the real bride and groom will be replaced by their effigies.
While bride getting ready groom is already waiting. Isn't that always a thing? 😁 pic.twitter.com/7QvFCiI3Re

Last week too, one such marriage took place in Karnataka. The marriage ceremony was for Sobha and Chandappa, who died thirty years ago. A YouTuber named Anny Arun shared the details of the wedding on Twitter.
