KOCHI: This is the story of how Rameez, who was paralysed below the waist and leg atrophied, became the champion in a body-building contest after six months of training. Before that, you need to know something else. Having passed B.com and web development course, Rameez is earning a five-figure salary in an American company in Info Park.

He joined the gym last January to gain strength in his legs to climb the stairs of the PSC coaching centre. This 26-year-old from Kochi has won this year's Mr Ernakulam title for the differently-abled as well as third place in Mr Kerala. He is continuing regular training to prepare for next year's national and international competitions.

Rameez suffers from Spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly. He started walking with the help of crutches from the age of 12. His mother Sunitha and father Nisar used to carry him to school. Later, he went to college by himself on a tricycle. He now goes to work on a motorized three-wheeler.

Trainer Jinto of Body Craft gym took up Rameez's training wholeheartedly. He stood by Rameez like an elder brother. Astonishingly, the disciple learned the exercises quickly. He did everything such as leg press, lat pull, chin up, chest workout, delt shoulder... all with ease.

Rameez, who came to know about the bodybuilding competition held by NPC last March through social media, participated in the competition without telling his family. He managed to shock everyone by emerging as the winner in the physically challenged category.
