IDUKKI: As the water level reached 137.45 feet, three spillway shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam was opened on Friday. The shutters of the dam were raised by 30cm. Around 534 cubic feet of water will be released per second from the dam. After two hours, a total of 1,000 cubic feet of water will be released.
Alerts have been issued in areas such as Vallakadavu, Chappath, Upputhara and Vandiperiyar. After half an hour, the water will first reach Vallakadavu. An NDRF team has arrived at the spot. Leaders including Water Supply Minister Roshi Augustine are camping in the area.
As the water level crossed 136 feet, an early warning was issued about opening the shutter. Alert has been issued on the banks of Periyar river. However, there is no need for any fear, said the authorities. Meantime, the water level in Idukki dam has reached 2380.32 feet. When it rises to 2381.53 feet, an orange alert will be declared. The dam currently has 10 feet more water than that of last year.
