KOCHI: The High Court has ordered a review of the orders passed by the government fixing the cut-off date for the distribution of pension to college teachers following the seventh pay revision within three months. Justice Devan Ramachandran's direction is to review the order issued on February 25, 2021, and the follow-up order issued on December 2, 2021, imposing conditions on the pension distribution of retired college teachers.
The single bench considered the petitions filed by 850 people, including Aluva native Dr PV Srinivasan, a retired college teacher, questioning the distribution of pensions to the retired teachers by dividing them into two tiers.
The 7th Pay Revision was implemented with retrospective effect from January 1, 2016. The government had clarified that pension arrears be deemed to have been paid to the college teachers who retired from this date till 30th June 2019 and that pension arrears will be paid to those who have retired after that. The petitioners argued that it was discriminatory to divide the pensioners into two tiers by fixing the cut-off date of June 30, 2019, which has no relevance.
