KOLLAM: As the open university courses have not received UGC approval, distance education courses are likely to be permitted in all universities in th state this year. Based on the High Court order, the state higher education department secretary will hold a discussion with the open university authorities today.

The High Court ordered that if the Open University authorities are unable to present the documents of UGC approval in the meeting to be held at 11 am today, permission should be given to other universities to continue distance courses. The order also said that if the Open University gets approval, other universities should be allowed to continue courses which are not there. It is also suggested to issue an order in this regard before August 26.

The Open University has submitted an application to the UGC to start 12 undergraduate courses and 5 post-graduate courses but has not yet received approval. An inapection team was also appointed. But it is hinted that inspection got delayed as one from the team withdrew.
