KOLLAM: A three-and-a-half-year-old girl and her great-grandmother who were in a car were killed after a container lorry hit their car near the Kureepuzha Bridge on the Kollam Bypass. The deceased have been identified as Pettah native VS Krishnakumari (82) and Janaki, daughter of Chathannoor native Sudheesh and Krishnagadha. Krishnakumari's son Jaydev, Jaydev's wife Sheeba, and their daughter Krishnagadha sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment in private hospitals. The family was returning from Guruvayur in the evening after attending a relative's marriage and Janaki's Tulabhara.
The family members were travelling in two cars. Of these, the car carrying Krishnakumari, Jayadev, Sheeba, Krishnagadha and Janaki collided with a lorry that came from the opposite direction at around one o'clock on Monday night. It was local residents and the fire force that pulled out the occupants of the car and took them to the hospital. Krishna Kumari was found trapped in the front seat of the car. The fire force team managed to pull her out by cutting the parts of the car using a hydraulic cutter. It was Jayadev who drove the car. Krishnakumari died soon after she was admitted to the hospital. Janaki died at 7 am yesterday.
The front of the car was completely damaged in the accident. The lorry driver, Sajith, a native of Thrissur Chelakkara, was seriously injured. Shaktikulangara police have registered a case.
