NEW DELHI: The Centre is planning to collect tolls from bank accounts linked to vehicle numbers with the help of automatic number plate reader cameras. The system of connecting the vehicles with the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and charging money from bank accounts after calculating the distance travelled on the national highway will also be implemented.
These reforms are being introduced to replace the current practice of collecting tolls for the distance from one toll plaza to the next. As per the new reforms, money will be charged only for the distance travelled on national highways.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the new system is being implemented on an experimental basis. He added that an amendment will be brought to implement the new system. There will be provisions to make e-number plates mandatory and impose fines on vehicle owners who avoid toll plazas.
