NEW DELHI: UU Lalit (64) will take the oath and assume office as the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Saturday. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath in a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will retire on November 8 after remaining in office for 74 days.
Lalit is set to be the second CJI to be elevated to the top court from the bar after Justice SM Sikri. Born on November 9, 1957 in Maharashtra, Justice Lalit was enrolled as an advocate in the Bombay High Court in 1983. He started practicing in the Supreme Court in 1986. He was designated as the senior advocate of the Supreme Court in April 2004. He became a Supreme Court judge on August 13, 2014.
