BENGALURU: In a major drug bust at Bangalore's Kempegowda International Airport, 14 kg of heroin worth Rs 99 crore was seized. The DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) officials arrested a teacher from Telangana in connection with the incident.
The 52-year-old accused arrived in Bengaluru on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. He tried to smuggle drugs by hiding them in two trolley bags. It was during the baggage check that heroin was found hidden in the bags.
The drug was kept in a secret compartment at the bottom of the bag. It was covered with black tape to avoid the airport's computer scanners. But after seeing the bottom of the bag, the officers got suspicious and checked it in detail.
The accused also told the DRI officials how he became a part of the drug gang. After seeing a foreign job ad online, he contacted them. The phone was picked up by someone from Addis Adaba, Ethiopia. He reached an agreement with them to smuggle drugs from Ethiopia to India.
Officials also informed that he had booked another flight ticket from Bengaluru to deliver the drugs brought from Ethiopia to Delhi. The Bengaluru unit of DRI had received secret information that a large quantity of heroin was being smuggled to Delhi through Bengaluru.
