KOTTAYAM: Isolated places in Kottayam received heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, on Monday. Three students were swept by strong currents in two regions in the district. All three were later rescued. Kavyamol, a class 6 student of SMV School in Poonjar, was swept by strong currents in a water body. Luckily, locals rushed to the spot and rescued her.
Two school students were swept away by strong currents in Teekoy while they were walking through the road. The students were giving way to a vehicle when they were swept by the strong current. Fortunately, the two managed to escape with minor injuries.
Areas near Kottayam city received heavy rainfall. Several streams and waterbodies overflowed. Although water rose on roads and some houses, the water receded within hours. There was no significant damage. There wasn't much rain in the landslide-prone areas in the eastern parts of the district. Hence, the water level did not rise in the Meenachil river and Manimala river.
