COIMBATORE: A 62-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping off the Doddabetta Peak in Nilgiris. She was on a pleasure trip with her family. She has been identified as Leelavati, wife of Nataraj of Raghavendra Nagar in Coimbatore.

She reached Ooty in a bus and took an auto to reach the peak. Safety barricades were placed to prevent people from jumping down from Tamil Nadu's highest mountain Doddabetta. Tourists were also warned not to cross the security barricades. However, Leelavati went forward and committed suicide.

Though the people taking video tried to discourage her from the act, she jumped down. The fire and rescue officials reached the spot and lifted the body. Leelavati was identified from the photo she had in her bag. An amount of Rs 16,000 was also found in her bag. The body was handed over to her relatives after post-mortem at the government hospital in Ooty. The cause of suicide has not yet been found. The police believe that she may have taken the drastic step due to family issues.
