KOCHI: The High Court has said that the National Medical Commission's (NMC) proposal to levy government fees on 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges should not be implemented in Kerala. Justice Devan Ramachandran's order was based on pleas filed by Kerala Christian Professional College Management Federation, Kerala Private Medical College Management Association and others against the NMC proposal.

One of the 25 recommendations made by the NMC on February 3 is that government fees should be imposed on 50 per cent merit seats in private medical colleges. The petitioners approached the High Court alleging that this was not legal. The order of the single bench also said that the admission and fee regulatory committee should follow the other instructions of NMC regarding the fees determination.

However, NMC explained that the office memorandum was issued as a nationwide directive and the states can make changes in it on their own.
