426 lives are lost every day in road accidents in India. 1.6 lakh people died in road accidents in the year 2021. Although travel restrictions were in place due to Covid, 2021 became the year with the highest number of people killed in road accidents. It was the National Crime Records Bureau that released the figures in this regard the other day. When 100 road accidents take place, 44 of them involve two-wheelers. 18,900 pedestrians were also killed after being hit by vehicles. Most of these persons met with accidents while crossing the roads. At present, road development in India is going on at a very fast pace. The authorities are constructing wide highways for the smooth movement of vehicles. However, it seems that the safety of pedestrians and those crossing roads has not been given enough consideration. Changes should be made in road construction to ensure greater safety for pedestrians and two-wheelers. Increasing focus on highways and lapse in the maintenance of smaller roads is also leading to an increase in the number of accidents.
Tamil Nadu, which built the highest number of highways, came second after UP in the highest number of accidents. A detailed study must be conducted to find out the reason behind this. A total of 33,296 road accidents occurred in Kerala in 2021. Of these, 3429 people lost their lives while 40204 people were injured. The main cause of road accidents in Kerala is the poor condition of the roads. Road accidents can be reduced by half if the existing roads are maintained on time. A culture of obeying traffic rules as every citizen's personal duty is yet to develop here. Good road culture will not necessarily develop just because of the introduction of fines. Traffic rules should be made part of the school curriculum to teach children these rules from an early age. When that happens, most people will naturally follow the rules of the road. There should be educational reforms that include such practical things. The number of vehicles is increasing day by day in every state. However, the condition of the roads is not improving accordingly. The increase in road accidents can be reduced only if these two are combined.
