KOCHI: The High Court has directed Vigilance to conduct an inspection regarding the damaged roads in the state and provide a report containing the details of the accused and the measures, and a technical inspection report. Justice Devan Ramachandran gave the direction while considering the petitions filed by CP Ajith Kumar, owner of Suburban Travels in Ernakulam, demanding that the poor condition of the roads be resolved.
Following the instructions of the court, Vigilance Director Manoj Abraham explained the steps taken on complaints related to damaged roads in the state in an online appearance. Justice Devan Ramachandran, who praised the vigilance measures, directed that the report be submitted when the petitions are heard again on October 4. In addition to this, the Public Works Department should provide the status report of the roads under the Public Works Department and the information on the running contracts awarded for their maintenance. A report specifying the measures taken for the maintenance of Perumbavoor - Kothamangalam - Munnar road and other roads in similar condition should also be submitted.
The High Court has also directed the central government to inform its stance on taking action against the culprits in the case of the death of a scooter passenger who fell into a pothole near Athani on the national highway. The High Court also clarified the District Collector will be responsible if any traffic accident occurs due to potholes on roads that are left unrepaired.
