PARAVUR: A three-month pregnant woman from Thiruvananthapuram who committed suicide yesterday suffered severe harassment at her husband's house in Paravur. The 24-year old woman identified as Amala, wife of Renjith and an auto driver of Paravur Chendamangalam, took the drastic step yesterday. She was the daughter of Vijaya Kumar and Rajeshwari of Vallakadavu Karali near Ananthapurai Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Her family have lodged a complaint with the Vanchiyoor police. The complaint alleged mental harassment she faced from his family.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon. Ranjith's father broke open the door of the bedroom and found her hanging from the fan as there was no response despite calling her several times. He summoned Ranjith immediately and took her to the taluk hospital in an auto, but she died before reaching there.

The two got married on August 24 in 2020. Amala's aunt’s daughter is staying nearby. The marriage proposal came through her. Amala's relatives alleged that her in-laws won’t allow her to visit her parents and won’t even allow her to call her parents. Whenever she makes a call, the phone has to be put on the loudspeaker. Will record her call. It was also alleged that they informed about her pregnancy only after her death. However, when contacted Ranjith's family said they did not allow her to visit her parents to avoid the long journey as Amala had miscarried twice before.

She was staying with Ranjith and his parents Ashokan and Bindu. Ranjith's sister, who came for her delivery was also at home at the time of the incident. Paravur police said a detailed investigation is being conducted. After post-mortem at Ernakulam Medical College, the body was brought to Thiruvananthapuram. Police said the preliminary conclusion of the post-mortem is suicide. Aaromal is Amala’s sibling.
