KARACHI: It has been confirmed that Gajinder Singh, the suspect in the 1981 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight to Lahore and a terrorist on India's most wanted list, is still in Pakistan. Through a Facebook post, Gajinder himself revealed his whereabouts. The Pakistani government had earlier rejected the claim that Gajinder was in Pakistan

Gajinder, the founder of the Dal Khalsa organization, posted a picture on Facebook of him standing in front of Gurdwara Paniya Sahib in Hasan Abdal, Punjab province in Pakistan.

On September 29, 1981, five persons including Gajinder hijacked an Indian Airlines jet departing from Delhi to Srinagar with 111 passengers and 6 crew members. They landed the plane in Lahore. They demanded the release of Khalistan members including Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The hijackers underwent a trial in Pakistan and were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court. However, they were released from jail in October 1994. Reports suggest that Singh had been on the country's 20 most wanted list in 2002 and the Indian government has repeatedly tabled requests to Islamabad seeking his deportation. Despite India's demand for Gajinder's extradition, Pakistan did not accept this demand.
