ALUVA: A woman tried to commit suicide after the police took her husband into custody on the allegation that gold ornaments were missing from the house where she was working. Sonali (28), wife of Murshidabad native Poltu Sharma, who lives on rent in Kadungalloor panchayat, attempted suicide in her bedroom at around 3:30 yesterday evening. She has been admitted to Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Poltu Sharma, who sustained injuries after being manhandled by the police, is undergoing treatment at Kalamasery Medical College.
On September 3, 15 sovereigns of gold went missing from the cupboard of Elookkara native Karim's house. The family lodged a complaint with the Binanipuram police alleging that Sonali, who worked in the house two days ago, had stolen the gold. Following this, the police summoned Sonali and interrogated her, They also told her to appear with her husband on Monday. According to her complaint, the police manhandled Poltu after releasing her that evening. It is said that Sonali tried to hang herself after the police refused to release her husband from custody.
Poltu's relatives broke the door and rushed Sonali to the hospital. Sonali, who sustained a neck injury, is in critical condition. The couple has been living here for six years. They have two children. Sonali is blind in one eye. It is also said that after learning about the incident, the police released Poltu after paying an autorickshaw charge of Rs 1000.
