This time, the Malayalis celebrated Onam by incorporating the joys of Onam, which were stolen by flood and Covid, into their lives in every sense. The Onam celebrations felt doubly sweet with the support and assistance of various departments of the state government, especially the tourism department, to prepare the festive atmosphere of Onam.
Memories of Onam can be attributed to stories or legends. There may be people who point out that there is no logical historical backing for that. But beyond these kinds of thoughts, Onam is a sweet and heart-warming memory for the Malayalis. Perhaps it is a picture of an indomitable desire to achieve a prosperous social life without lies and falsehoods.
As the times and stories changed and the conflicts and complications in the living environment got mixed up, the life of the Malayali also changed. The Nipah outbreak in 2017, floods in 2018 and 2019, and the Covid pandemic in the following two years have not only destroyed the festive celebrations in our lives but also put our lives on the edge of our seats. For the Malayali, the last two years have been days of isolation as part of closures and restrictions. This time, Malayalis came out of all such restrictions and celebrated the festival of Onam with all its grandeur. Even the havoc caused by the monsoon season did not dampen the Onan celebrations. The homely expression 'Kaanam Vittum Onam Unnanam' (One must have the Onam lunch even by selling one's property if need be) has also been corrected this time. The government led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan provided an opportunity for all Malayalees to celebrate Onam without any financial difficulties. Food kits containing rice and condiments graced everyone's kitchen without distinction. Welfare pensions were fully disbursed. Entire Kerala was happy to hear the news that the KSRTC employees received their delayed salaries ahead of Onam. Although there was rain in the initial days of the festival season, Malayalis were able to enjoy Onam with celebrations. The land and the city were filled with Onam festivals. Despite the diversity of regional variations, the people of Kerala enjoyed and celebrated Onam alike.
The ten-day-long Onam festival ended with a colourful procession held in the capital city the other day. Tens of thousands thronged the city to witness the procession. The police played a commendable role in conducting the Onam celebrations peacefully on all the days till the end without raising any complaints. Wishing that every celebration will be realized with more excellence and brilliance. Congratulations once again to all those who enriched the Onam celebration.
