NEW DELHI: Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi (67) is set to be appointed as the fourteenth Attorney General of India after KK Venugopal vacates the post. This will be Rohatgi's second tenure as an Attorney General, after he served the post for the first time between June 2014 and June 2017.

Rohatgi, who is one of the top advocates in India, has appeared in several important cases, including the Gujarat riots cases. Despite stepping down from the post of AG, he had provided legal advice to the central government on issues, including the repeal of Article 370. A native of Mumbai, Rohatgi completed his law studies from Govt Law College, Mumbai. He later started practicing under Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, the 36th Chief Justice of India. In 1999, he was the Additional Solicitor General during the term of the Vajpayee government.

Veteran advocate and constitutional expert KK Venugopal is the first Malayali to reach this position. He assumed this post on June 30, 2017. The Centre decided to appoint Rohatgi as AG after Venugopal expressed unwillingness to continue in the top law officer's post beyond September 30 citing health problems.
