THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Months after the attack at AKG Centre here, a Youth Congress (YC) worker has been taken into Crime Branch (CB) custody. Jithin, a native of Manvila and Attipra constituency president of YC, is being interrogated in the custody of the CB. The crime branch says that it was Jithin who threw firecrackers at the AKG Centre. The interrogation is done by a probe team headed by SP Madhusudanan at the CB office in Jawahar Nagar.
The CB had already started an investigation focusing on YC workers. Based on this, the investigation was centered around the YC workers of Attipra, Menamkulam and Kazhakkootam areas. Jithin's name was raised in the initial stage of the incident. Now the top officials say that he has been taken into custody based on circumstantial evidence.
On June 30, around 11.45 pm, an unidentified person on a scooter hurled an explosive device at the AKG Centre. The explosive device was thrown at the building after deceiving the security personnel. The CCTV footage of the incident was immediately obtained, but the accused could not be caught. The police checked around 50 CCTV footages and 1000 phone records but to no avail. As the police were left in the dark without getting any clue about the accused, the case was handed over to the crime branch.
The opposition had raised the allegation that the accused were not arrested because the CPM was behind the attack. At this time, it was alleged that a street vendor, who was traveling on a scooter at the time, has links with a local CPM leader. The vendor, a native of Rajaji Nagar, was initially detained by the police and interrogated before being released. The opposition also raised allegations that he was released after the intervention of a CPM youth leader who was a municipal councillor.
At the same time, the preliminary assumption of the forensic experts is that materials such as firecrackers were used for the attack. No metal fragments or broken bottles were recovered from the scene. Forensic experts have so far only obtained traces of gunpowder. The preliminary assumption is that the incident was carried out using an object similar to a local firecracker.
