Actor Kamal Haasan has come in support of director Vetrimaaran who made a controversial statement that Raja Raja Chola was not a Hindu king. Now. The actor said Hinduism did not exist during Raja Raja Cholan's time.
"During the time of Raja Raja Chola there was no such thing as 'Hinduism'. There were Vainavam, Sivam and Samanam. The term Hindu was used by the British to refer to them in general. It's similar to how they turned Tuthukudi into Tuticorin.'', Kamala Haasan said.
Vetrimaaran's controversial statement was during an event. 'Raja Raja Cholan was not a Hindu. But they (BJP) are trying to steal our identity and have already tried to saffronize Thiruvalluvar. This should never be allowed'- Vetrimaaran said. This statement came after the release of Ponniyin Selvan.
BJP leader H Raja responded that Raja Raja Cholan was a Hindu king. He also challenged Vetrimaaran. 'I don't know history like Vetrimaaran, but let him point out the mosques and masjids built by Raja Raja Cholan. Raja Raja Cholan called himself 'sivapadha sekharan'. Was he not a Hindu then?'- asked the leader.
