CHENNAI: Videos and pictures of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman buying vegetables from a street vendor are getting a lot of attention on social media. The minister's office tweeted the visuals of her buying vegetables from Mylapore market during her visit to Chennai.

Nirmala Sitharaman had previously stated that vegetables are one of the key items at the centre of rising inflation in the country and the government will intervene in this sector. As the video surfaced online, it evoked a mixed response from the people.

In the video, the minister can be seen buying vegetables like sweet potato and bitter gourd. Many people have commented under the post to buy onions and tomatoes, which are most affected by the price hike. Another tweet stated that as the minister is buying vegetables, they can expect a response on price hike at least now.

Meanwhile, the minister's purchase of vegetables in plastic covers has also raised a lot of criticism. People will be fined if they use plastic bags. But the Finance Minister is clearly breaking the rules. Many pointed out that there is plastic ban in Chennai. While some others doubted whether the minister paid the money digitally or in cash.

Some users have also supported the Union Minister’s action. 'Humble', 'performing duty efficiently' were some of the comments under the video.
