ALAPPUZHA: The emergency rescue force of animal lovers rescued an eight-month-old stray dog who was in the face of death after getting stuck between concrete spans for about 60 hours. The incident took place near Kidangara Bazar Junction on AC Road.
The dog, on Saturday morning, got stuck between the huge concrete spans 20 meters in length and weighing 25 tons that were brought as part of the demolition of the Kidangara Bazar bridge. R. Ranjith, owner of a pet shop, who came to open the shop in the morning, first saw it. Then Ranjith and the locals tried to save the dog but were unsuccessful. The dog was trapped inside the spans in such a way that no food or water could be given.
The contractors of the road renovation works were informed but the spans could not be removed. With this, the Changanassery unit of the fire brigade was informed. The rescue team reached the spot on Sunday evening but failed. Then the firemen gave a number of the dog rescue team. After the video clip of the trapped dog was handed over to a dog rescue group, it became a topic of discussion on social media.
According to Bijilal, a resident of Kottayam, who noticed the video, animal welfare activist Sali Verma forwarded the information to the emergency rescue force in Nilambur. The team reached Kidangara on Monday morning at 7.30 and spent two hours trying to get the dog out using small wires without moving the beams. The dog, which was in a weak state without access to food and water, was released after giving first aid. ERF members Bibin Paul, KM Abdul Majeed, Shahban Mambattu, Deni Abraham, T. Najumuddin and local residents Gokul Kidangara and R Ranjith took part in the rescue operation.
