NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has said that the Vice Chancellor appointment of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University is not in accordance with the UGC rules. The petition seeking cancellation of the appointment was adjourned for judgment.

A bench headed by Justice M R Shah observed by pointing out the appointment of Dr. Rajashree MS that instead of forwarding the panel to the Chancellor for the appointment of VC,only one person's name was forwarded. The court's observation is on the petition filed by Sreejith PS former Dean of Cochin University of Science and Technology.

The argument by Rajshree and the state government was that under the UGC rules, they have the power to make appointments based on the state law. However, the search committee has to hand over a panel with multiple names to the chancellor for the appointment of VC. When Rajshree's counsel pointed out that the term of the VC will end in February, Justice MR Shah asked if there is any problem if the person whose term ends in February leaves early. Advocate PV Dinesh appeared for Rajshree, Senior advocate Jaideep Gupta for the State Government, Standing Consul Harshad V Hamid, lawyers Dr Amit George, Mohammad Sadiq and Alim Anwar appeared for Sreejith.
